Alumni Reunions |
Recently, whilst attending his 50th anniversary reunion in Old College, Army veteran and RMAS alumni Edward Usbourn was able to pass on a beloved sword to the next generation of Officer Cadets.
Fifty years ago, as an Officer Cadet undergoing training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Edward placed an ad in Lady Magazine seeking a sword, describing himself as an "impoverished officer cadet ." A kind lady answered his call, offering him a George Vth cavalry-regiment sword in return for a £50 donation to charity.
Understanding its significance, Edward’s godmother arranged for the sword to be expertly refurbished at Wilsons, ensuring it remained in pristine condition throughout his service
In 2025, he had the honour of passing down his treasured sword to a senior cadet nearing the completion of his 44-week training at RMAS, the son of a close friend. In return, the Officer Cadet donated £200 to charity and so the sword's legacy continiues,
This story really is a powerful reminder that the true strength of Sandhurst lies not just in its history, but in the unbroken chain of camaraderie it forges.
