The Sandhurst lake continues to reveal its secrets!

Academy News

We recently posted that the Sandhurst Lake was being drained to enable essential repairs to be made.

Taking full advantage of the lake being the lowest it has been in over 200 years, the Station Commander organised a very special event for staff and families of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.  On Sunday 2nd November, under beautiful Autumn sun a group took to the exposed lakebed for a metal detecting adventure, making the most of this once-in-a-generation opportunity before the waters return.

Amongst the treasures unearthed were:

  1. metal cap badges,
  2. coins
  3. a spoon (possibly from Intake 1 shenanigans)
  4.  an antique iron
  5.  and not surprisingly a great number of bullets.
  6. Also recovered were numerous tennis balls, though these appeared to be the handiwork of local dogs rather than the legendary “tennis-ball mortars” of cadet folklore!

Items of interest have been passed to the Sandhurst Collection for inspection, and we’ll be sure to share any significant discoveries.

As for what we didn’t find (suggestions from the previous post), so far

  1. no Gnomes
  2. Churchill’s fob watch,
  3. a Charlie Gustav from SMC 882
  4. Lord Lucan,
  5. Shergar or
  6. the lost morale and sense of humour of many Officer Cadets!

It really was a fantastic day of curiosity and shared history for all those privileged to attend.

A huge thank you to the Station Commander for organising such a memorable event.
