A Tribute in Glass: The Memorial Window for Field Marshal Sir John Lyon Chapple

We are honoured to share this video showcasing the unveiling of the newest Memorial Window installed in the Royal Memorial Chapel at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The Memorial Window to Field Marshal Chapple was designed by Sarah Knighton ACR, AMGP, BA(Hons), of Holy Well Glass in Wells, Somerset, and installed by her with her team of Eilish Ward and Joanna Moylett in December 2025. Sarah was awarded the 2016 “New glass artist of the year” accolade by the Worshipful Company of Glaziers. Winner of the 2016 Steven’s Competition and Prize for Presentation.

This traditional stained-glass masterpiece is crafted using handmade antique and flashed glass, meticulously acid-etched, painted, and silver stained. At its heart is the crest of Sir John Lyon Chapple, with hanging badges representing his honours:
• Order of the British Empire
• Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath
• Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem

Further regimental badges honour his service with the Finsbury Rifles and the Royal Engineers, alongside the colours of the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles).

At the base of the window, a map of the Gulf reflects Field Marshal Chapple’s role in providing military advice to government during his appointment as Chief of the General Staff. Above, the WWF symbol commemorates his time as a Trustee of the World Wildlife Fund, representing his commitment beyond military service.

This new window joins the other memorial windows in the Royal Memorial Chapel dedicated to Field Marshals including:

  • Viscount Montgomery
  • Viscount Slim
  • Earl Alexander
  • Sir Henry Wilson
  • Sir Claude Auchinleck
  • Viscount Gort
  • Viscount Alanbrook
  • Sir John Dill
  • Viscount Wavell
  • HRH the Duke of Gloucester
