This year, the organizers aimed to create a more engaging and interactive atmosphere. The evening kicked off with an hour of networking with fizz and canapés, before a 2 course dinner served in the prestigious Indian Army Memorial Room.
The evening was hosted by Brigadier Andy Cox, the current Chair of the Army FA, with Graham Brookland serving as the President of the Mess Committee (PMC).The guest speaker for the night was the renowned footballer Mick McCarthy a revered figure in the football world with a career spanning several decades. As a player, McCarthy was known for his robust defending and leadership qualities, which saw him captain the Republic of Ireland national team. As a manager, he lead the Republic of Ireland to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The highlight of the evening was the awards presentation, recognizing the outstanding contributions and achievements in Army football over the past year. The awards celebrated both individual and team successes, reflecting the dedication and passion for football within the Army community.
The formal proceedings culminated in an engaging Q&A session between Graham Brookland and football legend Mick McCarthy. McCarthy entertained the audience with anecdotes from his illustrious playing and managing career, particularly focusing on his experiences north of the border and the fierce rivalry between Rangers and Celtic.
Football continues to be played competitively throughout the Army. It remains the ‘soldier’s sport’ and is enjoyed by all ranks at various levels of competition throughout the season.
Army Football is a County within the Football Association and is committed to the advancement of football within the Army at all levels. Football is the most widely enjoyed game in the Army, and the Army Football Association provides the necessary administrative support to promote the game. Based in Aldershot, the home of Army sports, the association operates out of Fox Lines near the Aldershot Military Stadium. Here, they work tirelessly to ensure that football remains an integral part of Army life.
