Record breaking numbers visit Sandhurst on historical tours

June and July have been bustling with over 490 guests attending the Sandhurst Trust’s historical tours.

Participants had the opportunity to explore and appreciate the iconic buildings, artifacts, and memorabilia of this renowned institution, celebrated for shaping some of the finest military leaders in history. Sandhurst Trust tours not only enhance public appreciation for RMAS but also reinforce the importance of preserving historical institutions and the stories they hold.

Private and Public Tours

We successfully hosted six private tours, catering to smaller, more intimate groups seeking a personalised experience. These tours provided an in-depth look at the Academy’s storied past, its architectural marvels, and the daily life of its cadets.

In addition to the private tours, we organised two public tours, including the largest public tour we have ever conducted. This tour broke previous attendance records and demonstrated the continued public interest in the history and legacy of Sandhurst.

Special Groups and Educational Visits

Our educational outreach included hosting 120 international Combined Cadet Force (CCF) cadets. These young cadets, hailing from various countries, were given an opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditions and training ethos of one of the world’s premier military academies. Their visit was designed to inspire and educate, offering a firsthand experience of the rigorous training that shapes future military leaders.

We also welcomed 30 local scout cubs, providing them with an engaging and informative tour which helped them gain their local knowledge badge. The visit also emphasised teamwork, discipline, and leadership—values that are central to both scouting and military training. Additionally, 15 students from Carlton Junior School in Batley Carr visited the Academy, where they participated in interactive sessions and activities showcasing ‘life at Sandhurst’.

Special Interest and Professional Groups

The International Police Association, an organisation that fosters global police cooperation, visited Sandhurst as part of their professional development program. Their group tour focused on the Academy’s training methodologies and its role in developing leadership skills applicable to policing.

The Sterling Training Group, a renowned training organisation, also toured the Academy. Their visit aimed to draw parallels between military training techniques and corporate leadership development, highlighting best practices that can be applied across different sectors.

The Worshipful Company of Glaziers, one of the City of London’s ancient livery companies, was another notable visitor. Their tour provided insights into the Academy’s rich array of stained-glass windows and centred on the Royal Memorial Chapel, Catholic Chapel and the Indian Army Memorial Room.

Special Visits and International Guests

We were pleased to host the Yorkshire Regiment during their visit, arranged by the Commandant. This tour reinforced the close ties between Sandhurst and various military units.

Members of the Pakistan Polo team also toured the Academy, reflecting Sandhurst’s international reach and its role in fostering global military camaraderie.

Lastly, we were honoured to host a short visit from an alumnus from Nigeria, Maj Gen Sam Ango, who trained on Intake 47, 1969-71. Accompanied by his daughter, Tabitha, Major General Ango enjoyed a nostalgic reunion with his old roommate, Brigadier Tom Foulkes (Late RE), along with several former platoon members. This memorable visit allowed them to reminisce and celebrate their shared history and enduring bonds.

As always, these tours would not be possible without the support of our army of volunteer tour guides. Thank you, gentlemen.

Recent Glowing Review

Ian was a marvellous host, his knowledge (and at times patience with my questions) was impressive - there is a lot to remember! - he clearly has such pride in Sandhurst and happy memories of his time there, some of which he kindly shared with us.

Historical Tours

Although the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is a closed establishment, hundreds of visitors are welcomed each year on historical tours organised by the Sandhurst Trust.

Tours take place throughout the year and are led by experienced tour guides, most of whom are retired officers, who share their extensive knowledge on the history of the Academy and its buildings. Typical tours last 2.5 hours, giving visitors plenty of time to take in the history of the buildings and rooms.

Tours include visits to the main prestige rooms of Old College including the Indian Army Memorial Room, Wellington Room, History Room, and the Old College Grand Entrance. Also included are the two chapels on site -the Royal Memorial Chapel, and Roman Catholic Chapel. Tours can now include a visit to the new Queen Elizabeth II statue that was installed in 2022 to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
