On Thursday 15th June the Sandhurst Trust hosted 30 Year 8 children from Hall Grove school on a special visit as part of their end of year programme.

The day started with a presentation in the Model Room within Old College welcoming the children to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and sharing the history of the Academy and its iconic buildings. The children then learned about the training that current Officer Cadets experience on their 44 week course.

Current Officer Cadets discussed what day to day life is really like at the Academy and answered a number of questions including ‘what made you want to join the Army?’ ‘How do you decide which regiment you want to go to?' and ‘What does your hair look like under your beret?’

This year’s visit coincided with the All Arms Pace Sticking Champions, so the children were educated on the history and art of Pace Sticking.

Following an opportunity to watch some of the teams taking part in the Pace Sticking Competition, the children were then given the chance to try out pace sticking for themselves with the help of Errol, one of the Sandhurst Trust volunteer guides. The children also learned about the art of British Army Drill, and how tricky it can be to get your arms and legs moving in the right order!

There was a brief tour of Old College and both the Royal Memorial Chapel & Roman Catholic Chapel, taken by one of our tour guides, retired Army Officer, Lloyd.

After such a busy schedule there was just enough time to enjoy a picnic lunch at the picturesque lakeside before the children returned to school.

We hope all of the children enjoyed their day and wonder if one day we will see some of them returning to Sandhurst to start their Officer Training?

The Sandhurst Trust runs over one hundred events each year at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst including alumni reunions, historical tours, charity dinners, corporate events and private dinners.
