Sandhurst Tour Guides meet for on-site training at RMAS.
Tour Guide Training Day July 2023
Tour Guide Training Day July 2023

On 27th July we were pleased to host the Sandhurst Trust tour guides for a training day, here in Old College, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

This event takes place each term and allows the tour guides to stay up to date with the latest Sandhurst Trust news such as the events being run and charitable disbursement figures. Tour guides also benefit from Academy news including latest information on the Officer Cadet training programmes, recruitment statistics and new military personnel.

The packed programme involved talks from Academy departments including the Sandhurst Collection, Officer Cadet Administrative Cell (OCAC) and Lucknow Platoon.

Dr Anthony Morton from the Sandhurst Collection spoke in-depth about the role Sandhurst played in the Battle of Waterloo. Subjects covered included the Sandhurst timeline and subjects taught to Officer Cadets during this time at the Royal Military College (as it was known in 1815).

Colonel Winser discussed the role of the OCAC department, which is responsible for the recruitment and placement of UK and international cadets and the Academy’s defence engagement efforts.

Captain Tiffin from Lucknow Platoon discussed the training that takes place for Officer Cadets who have been injured and join the platoon temporarily.  He highlighted the important role that the platoon has in maintaining training so Officer Cadets can rejoin the Commissioning Course at the earliest possible point.

After all this hard work the tour guides were treated to lunch in one of the prestige rooms within Old College. This gave a perfect opportunity to chat with other tour guides, Sandhurst Trust staff and Academy staff.

Although the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is an enclosed establishment, hundreds of visitors are welcomed each year on historical tours organised by the Sandhurst Trust.

These tours are only possible thanks to our tour guides who generously offer their time and expertise to lead visitors around the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and share their extensive knowledge about the Academy's history, buildings and significance.  Visitors can also guarantee a few interesting anecdotes and stories from their time as Officer Cadets here at RMAS.

We are always looking for new volunteers to join the Sandhurst Trust team as tour guides and continue our extensive programme of historical tours. If you have a connection to the Academy and this is something you would be interested in, please email director@sandhursttrust.org to find out more.
