For 2024, IG has kindly agreed to sponsor the canoeing expeditions that take place as part of the Adventurous Training (AT) programme.  Adventurous Training (AT) is an important factor in the development of Officer Cadets at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Designed to take them out of their comfort zone,  AT  goes beyond physical activities; it instils qualities and skills essential for military leadership and personal development.

Exercise Caledonian Canoe

The expedition was a success. We were able to adapt and overcome the challenges that came our way, mainly the poor weather conditions to deliver an enjoyable and challenging AT expedition, learning lots of new skills and all meeting the requirements for our O2F Canoe qualification. Thank you very much to the Sandhurst Trust and IDG for providing us the funding to make our end of term AT Exped possible!

Exercise Hard Paddle

By the end of the last day, we were experts at canoeing (or nearly!). We had mastered the art of portaging at the locks on the canal by working together as a team to lift and move the canoes around the locks. We had also hugely improved our paddling and steering skills, getting quicker as the days went on. On the 2nd day in Loch Lochy we even managed to sail along together as a unit due to the stronger winds that were blowing South Westerly, pushing us in the exact direction we needed. A great trip enjoyed by all, and a great way to end Inters prior to a well deserved Christmas leave. Thank you to The Sandhurst trust and IDG for making our expedition possible.

Exercise Poseidon

The week was a great opportunity for all cadets as we each had never kayaked before so gained to gain a new foundation skill was a fantastic opportunity. Our grants from The Sandhurst Trust and IDG enabled us to make the most of the expedition. The weather conditions meant that each of us were pushed out of our comfort zones during the week and through the experience of our instructors we each gained an additional nugget of knowledge on various topics from leadership, basic soldiering, management of soldiers and AT!
