On Tuesday, 29th July, the guides were honoured with an invitation to the Commandant’s Thank You Reception. This special event was an opportunity for the Commandant, Major General Nick Cowley OBE and Brigadier Nick Wight-Boycott OBE to thank volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst over the past year.
Together with other volunteers, our Tour Guides enjoyed a warm and informal occasion at Government House, an opportunity to connect with all those that support the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst hosting visitors.
Later in the week, on Friday, our termly Guide Training Day took place. These sessions are vital for keeping our guides up to date with the latest changes around the Academy and ensuring they have access to ongoing development and support. This term’s training featured fascinating talks from Simon Shephard about a new book he is writing on Officer Training and Peter Franklin's extensive talk about the Royal Memorial Chapel. Both these talks offered new insights and perspectives about the Academy which will undoubtedly enrich future tours.
Before a well-earned lunch, joined by the Sandhurst Trust team, the guides were formally recognised for their efforts. The Commander, Brigadier Nick Wight-Boycott OBE took a moment to thank them personally and presented each one with a Commemorative Coin as a token of appreciation for their ongoing support to the Academy.
We were particularly pleased to welcome two of our original tour guides who were involved in the set up and first tours in 2012. Now both in their 90’s, and having retired from tour guiding, it was wonderful to see them back in RMAS.
Both events were a celebration of the guides’ hard work, passion, and continued commitment to the Sandhurst Trust and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Their knowledge and professionalism help bring RMAS’s story to life for thousands of visitors each year, from school groups and military enthusiasts to international dignitaries.
So far this year, the guides have run 60 historical tours and welcomed over 1,350 guests to the Academy, an impressive achievement that speaks volumes about their commitment and professionalism.
To all our guides: thank you for everything you do. Your dedication is truly appreciated.
