As one of the most prestigious military academies in the world, Sandhurst consistently attracts visitors eager to explore its rich history, heritage, and its role in shaping future military leaders.
This month, the Sandhurst Trust welcomed military enthusiasts and history lovers from across the country. The variety of tours this month included private tours, regimental groups, our popular monthly public tour, and a special visit for corporate client DHL. In addition, we organised a Family Tour for RMAS families.
The tours, led by knowledgeable veteran guides, provided visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the Academy’s iconic landmarks, including Old College, the Indian Army Memorial Room, and the Royal Memorial Chapel. Each location offers fascinating insights into Sandhurst’s role in military history and the education of countless officers who have gone on to serve in the British Army and armed forces around the world.
Old College, the heart of the RMAS, was a key highlight on the tours. Built in 1812, it has been the site of officer training for over two centuries. Visitors learned about the famous figures who have passed through its halls, from Winston Churchill to more recent alumni such as the Prince of Wales and James Blunt. Tour guests also gained insight into the rigorous training programs that have made Sandhurst synonymous with leadership and discipline.
Another popular stop was the Indian Army Memorial Room, which houses a collection of artefacts and memorabilia, highlighting the Academy’s close ties to the Indian subcontinent. This room serves as a powerful reminder of the global impact Sandhurst-trained officers have had throughout history.
The Royal Memorial Chapel, a stunning building dedicated to those who have given their lives in service, also attracted significant interest.. For many, this was a deeply moving part of the tour, looking at memorials to those that have lost their lives in wars over the last 150 years.
Tours take place throughout the year and are led by experienced tour guides, all retired military, who share their extensive knowledge on the history of the Academy and its buildings. Typical tours last 2.5 hours, giving visitors plenty of time to take in the history of the buildings and rooms.
